Niche Fiction (II)

I know we hear that we should "brand" ourselves, but my rear end (my "niche" markets) are way too broad to figure all of that out. So many advice columns, books, etc. are geared for non-fiction books, and fiction is my true love. HELP!>>
Fiction niches are more difficult to exploit than those for non-fiction, but far from impossible. In an earlier post I mentioned the work of a friend, Carol Marsh, who wrote book for young readers called (if I remember correctly) <<The Carowinds Mystery.>>
Carowinds is a theme park just south of Charlote, NC. Such a book will sell steadily, year after year, in and around the park, as well as elsewhere. I call this a geographical niche. Such a niche--when successful--will be in a limited geographical area, one that the self-publishing writer can easily manage, and it will have a continually refreshed pool of potential readers.
Eugenia Price's romance, Savannah, catered to another such niche. Again, her book focused on a limited geographical area and had a continually refreshed pool of potential readers.
The great thing about such niches is that you can duplicate your success in similar settings, over and over again. The ability to duplicate success is one the keys to all very successful businesses, and though writing is a craft or art, publishing is, after all, a business.
Examples: think of the Chicken Soup books or the Dummy's series. The original book was successful. The later ones in the series, built on duplication, were super-duper blockbusters.

Thanks so much for your reply to my question, Tom. Yes, geographical niches are very helpful. I have also found that topics that hit on "hot topics" on the news or "charitable causes" also help. My Patrick and Grace Mysteries, for example, deal with homelessness, and Monday Knight addresses drunk drivers. It does help, sort of like a "platform" for Miss America. I know I will never travel down that runway, so I'm trying to create my own.

I agree about fiction niches. My upcoming book titled SYMMETRY taps into a very large niche audience--approximately 8 million people in the U.S. alone who have trichotillomania, or compulsive hair pulling. Both SYMMETRY's heroine and its author have the disorder and intend to show the world that it's nothing to be ashamed of.
